Approach

« Often, I am overwhelmed by the emergence that, under the influence of fire, reveals itself on the nascent painting, and in the midst of the cloud of smoke released, I feel as if I am literally hovering between mystery and creation, between myself and the world around me »
Montserrat Torrents

Montserrat Torrents was born in Barcelona in 1970.
Her first life-changing encounter was with clay; it took place in the prehistoric caves of Menorca, in the Balearic Islands.
The island’s diverse sands fascinated her, as did the power of the sea, sometimes caressing the rocky cliffs, sometimes violently lashing them with the Tramontane wind. The geological diversity of the rocks made such an impression on her that it became a constant source of inspiration.
In 2005, she settled in the Yonne region of France. Her second pivotal encounter was with fire as a creative, visual, and sonic energy, which unfolded in Michel Moglia’s research workshop.

These four elements, brought together, triggered an immediate creative imperative: a vast field of exploration, a kind of affective, age-old, and tectonic alchemy.
“By presenting the means employed, we understand that what has just unfolded in fast motion before us is nothing other than the representation, the translation, or the attempt to elucidate a geological event. By lending it a strong allegorical meaning, by experiencing the emotional dimension of a personal and sensitive exploration, Montserrat Torrents continues her celebration of life, minerals, and fire.”
Patrick Bedout, Galerie B4

“Montserrat, like Max Ernst, works with matter, the desolate elements of the earth. She follows the course of the wind, for her hair undulates with its whims, a random beauty, like avatars of a chromatic reverie that, drawing on the ancient landscapes of Crete, captures a fragment of the Mediterranean and its misty Burgundy winters, like a window opening onto another world. A marvelous and indelible mark of a desire to return to one’s roots.”
